WHAT is it?
Kumbh Mela the most huge and massive religious pilgrimage in the world, where devotees gather at sacred rivers to plunge and getting spiritual benefits
WHERE is it?
The Kumbh Mela is celebrated in different places depending on the position of Jupiter and the sun. In the months of April and May of this year it will be celebrated in Ujjain, India
WHY this event?
It tells the legend of the Hindu Kumbh Mela, in which the powerful god Vishnu dropped four diamrita drops, the drink of immortality, while carrying in one urn. From these four drops four cities were founded: Haridwar, Allahabad, Nashik and Ujjain. For this reason, every three years, the festival is held in rotation in these four cities. Every twelve years, finally, the Maha Kumbh Mela takes place (also called Great Kumbh Mela), which is held in Allahabad.
Apparently, the last Kumbh Mela that took place in 2013 at Allahabad, they even participated 100,000 people!
There are a lot of activities, including: discussion and religious assemblies, devotional songs and donation of food to the wise men, women and the poor. But the ritual bath in the river is the central element of the event!
The focus of this traditional festival there are the Sadhus (good men) more commonly called Baba. These generally live away from social life in order to concentrate more better on meditation and attain liberation from the material world. The most eccentric, they inflict physical torture to prove a fullest control of the spirit on the pain and so on matter.
